Early in his career, his play Here is Monster was nominated for the Verity Bargate Award.
Spencer has won the Verity Bargate Award twice, for his plays Releevo and Killing the Cat.
His first play, A Night at the Dogs, was selected from over 700 entries to win the 2004 Verity Bargate Award.
After her death, the Verity Bargate Award was set up in her memory to encourage and reward new writing in the theatre.
