Aliwa! was also shortlisted for the script category of the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards, and nominated for commendation for the Louis Esson Prize for Drama: shortlist 2003.

Bill has published several books, including Park Prisoners: The Untold Story of Western Canada's National Parks and (with Blair Stonechild) Loyal till Death: Indians and the North-West Rebellion, which was a finalist for the 1997 Governor General's Literary Awards for non-fiction.
That same year the book was awarded both the The Nettie Palmer Prize for Non-fiction (one of the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards), and the Colin Roderick Award, awarded annually for "the best book published in Australia which deals with any aspect of Australian life" along with the H.T. Priestley Memorial Medal.
