With the death of Athirajendra Chola, the Chola dynasty of Vijayalaya Chola came to an end.
It is possible that Gandaraditya was without issue for a long time and in attempt to secure the continuation of the Vijayalaya dynasty, Gandaraditya made his brother heir apparent.
There was only one palace for Vijayalaya Chola, but later individual palaces were built for all the princes.
