After a touneé as soloist in the ex U.S.S.R., requested and organized by the ex Soviet Union, he had the good fortune to meet up with the world famous violinist Viktor Tretiakov and under his guidance with only three other pupils specialized at the P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.
He is laureate of the Shostakovich Prize, awarded by the Yuri Bashmet International Charitable Foundation, and the Glinka State Prize of the RSFSR (1981) (other recipients include the Borodin Quartet and composer Valery Gavrilin), and recently was awarded "the Order of Service to the Fatherland" by President Vladimir Putin.

In addition to Gilels, Verbitsky has worked with soloists such as Vladimir Spivakov, Gidon Kremer, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Oleg Kagan, Natalia Gutman, Viktor Tretiakov, Igor Oistrakh, Paul Badura-Skoda, and Frank Peter Zimmermann.
