Damascus is the home of the annual Trail Days festival, and is known as Trail Town USA due to the convergence of four scenic trails in the town, including the Appalachian Trail, U.S. Bicycle Route 76, The Iron Mountain Trail, and the Virginia Creeper Trail.
In the early 20th century, Lansing was a very busy place, primarily because of the Norfolk and Western Railroad Company (also known as the "Virginia Creeper").
Established in 1914, The Todd General Store (originally Cook Brothers General Store) was built by Walter and Monroe Cook in anticipation of the arrival of the Norfolk and Western "Virginia Creeper" railroad.
A rare 4-8-0 steam locomotive sits aside the trailhead at Abingdon, and several restored stations survive along the trail itself.
Most of the former roadbed in Virginia is occupied by the Virginia Creeper Trail.
