It is home to Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, and the Virunga Lodge hotel, which lies between them, commanding views of the lakes and the nearby Virunga mountains, making it one of Rwanda's tourist spots.
Mgahinga National Park was gazetted in 1991 and is a part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which is 434 km.
