Sporting Clube de Portugal was the defending champion but lost in the semi-finals to Vitória Sport Clube.
He made first European appearance in a Basel shirt on August 13, 2008 as a substitute in a 0–0 Champions League Qualifying match draw against Vitória S.C. at Estádio D. Afonso Henriques.
On 27 August 2008, he scored the winning goal in FC Basel's 2–1 win over Vitória S.C. at St. Jakob-Park which meant that Basel qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
His goals helped Rijeka to reach their first ever Europa League group stage where they were drawn in Group I together with Olympique Lyonnais, Real Betis and Vitória S.C..
He also started in Portsmouth's first ever European match, a 2–0 win over Vitória de Guimarães and set Jermain Defoe up with a cross.

After overcoming Leixões in a two-legged fixture, following an away draw and a home victory, Paços de Ferreira topped Group C, composed by the two Minho rivals, Braga and Vitória de Guimarães, and Arouca.
Cajuda returned to Portugal midway through 2006–07 campaign joining Vitória de Guimarães – being announced on Christmas Day – which he led to promotion and a third position in the following year, just narrowly surpassing S.L. Benfica for the last UEFA Champions League berth and only to lose controversially in the last qualifying round against FC Basel of Switzerland.
In the late 70s Wilson accumulated duties at Vitória de Guimarães and the Portuguese national team, being in charge of the latter during the unsuccessful UEFA Euro 1980 qualifying campaign.
He made his top level debut on 17 August 2009, playing the full 90 minutes in a 0–0 home draw against Vitória de Guimarães and eventually appearing in 24 of the league's 30 games (22 starts) as the Sadinos barely avoided relegation.
