The Volcae Arecomici of their own accord surrendered to the Roman Republic in 121 BC, after which they occupied the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis (the area around modern day Narbonne), the southern part of Gallia Transalpina.

He was the younger son of Gaius Julius Severus (b. ca 25), a Nobleman from Akmonia at Galatia, and paternal grandson of Artemidoros of the Trocmi, a Nobleman at Galatia, Asia Minor (son of Amyntas, Tetrarch of the Trocmi, King of Galatia), and his wife a Princess of the Tectosagii (daughter of Amyntas, Tetrarch of the Tectosagii).
Dom Vaissette published a dissertation on the origins of the French in 1722, examining whether they descended from the Tectosages, a sept of the Volcae, or from the ancient Gauls of Germany.
