In 1993, Rolf Disch Solar Architecture and coach Volker Finke created the initiative to change their field into a solar soccer stadium.
On 1 July 2007, Tanko was named assistant coach for Freiburg's reserves, leaving after 18 months, together with Karsten Neitzel, to J. League's Urawa Red Diamonds, in the same capacity, as he rejoined former Freiburg boss Volker Finke.
In 1991, he followed manager Volker Finke to SC Freiburg, in the second division, and the two would eventually gain legendary status at the Black Forest outfit.
He made his debut two years later and made 32 appearances before SC Freiburg's legendary manager Volker Finke brought him to the Bundesliga.
On 14 May 2011 it was announced that Solbakken would take over as manager of 1. FC Köln of the German Bundesliga from sporting director Volker Finke, who acted as interim manager after Frank Schaefer quit during the season.
