The pioneering inventor, W. H. J. Grout of Stoke Newington, invented a portable version in which the large front wheel could be dismantled into four pieces so that they would fit into a carrying bag.

Grout first served in Portland, Oregon as the principal of North Central School from 1892 to 1895.
The museum started with the private collection and endowment of Henry W. Grout, a Waterloo financier and legislator.
