The WIIC callsigns are a direct reference to the city's longtime NBC affiliate WPXI, whose callsigns were WIIC-TV from 1957 to 1981.
After years of hosting many other local shows on WIIC (at a time where local stations often produced a significant amount of local programming), Cardille became host of the show for which he is probably best known: Chiller Theatre, a late night Saturday program that showed horror and science fiction films.
In 1957, the Post-Gazette launched WIIC-TV (now WPXI) as the area's first full-time NBC affiliate three years after Westinghouse Electric's Group W spurned NBC for CBS with its newly acquired former DuMont O&O WDTV (now KDKA-TV) despite KDKA Radio's longtime affiliation with NBC Radio.
He worked at WIIC-TV / WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh from 1970 until his retirement in 2001 as the Sports Director and principal Sports Anchor.
