He has served on the boards of the Graduate Business School at the University of Virginia, the National Minority Supplier Development Council, the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council, the Transatlantic Business Dialogue and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.
He joined forces with Elizabeth Colt to make the Wadsworth Atheneum a free public institution; on 16 October 1880, he was honored at the Atheneum by ex-President Ulysses S. Grant for his contributions to historic preservation.
The most accomplished of these, On the Yacht "Namouna," Venice (Wadsworth Atheneum, 1890), showed a sailing party on deck and included a portrait of the actress Lillie Langtry.
