Mount Morgan Mine

Wealth from the Mount Morgan mine was also bequeathed in 1912 to establish the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.

The syndicate comprised William Knox Darcy (later influential in establishing the Anglo Persian Oil Company), Walter Russell Hall (later influential in establishing the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research), Thomas Skarratt Hall, and Thomas, Frederick and Edwin Morgan.

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research was established from the trust in 1915.


Gordon Ada

When he returned to Australia, he conducted research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research under director Frank Macfarlane Burnet and was involved in the establishment of the Biochemistry and Biophysics Research Unit with Henry Holden.

Stephen Fazekas de St. Groth

He completed his education in Hungary and moved to Australia in the 1950s where he researched with Frank Macfarlane Burnet at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, and later at the John Curtin School of Medical Research and CSIRO in Canberra.
