Josef Anton von Gegenbaur (6 March 1800, Wangen, Württemberg – 31 January 1876, Rome) was an accomplished German historical and portrait painter.
In 1504, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilien I, having vanquished the Prince-elector, Philipp, in the war of succession of Bavaria, confiscated the castle from the cousins Hans and Stephan von Wangen for the count Tiestein, who himself gave it to the Archbishop of Strasbourg, Wilhelm III von Hohnstein, in 1516.
He was born in Troisvierges in 1813, the only child of the farmer Jean Adames and Marie Magdalena Wangen.
Some time before 1431, the farms of Oeschenbach, Böschenhubel, Kleinhaus, Bruch, Oeschenberg, Rebelberg and Sage were assigned to the Court of Affoltern in the Amt of Trachselwald, while Oeschenbach village and 16 other farms or farm house groups went to the Court of Ursenbach in the Amt of Wangen.
Westallgäu extends to the north to, amongst others, the towns of Leutkirch, Wangen and Isny.
