There are seven Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha constituencies in this district, namely Wani, Ralegaon (ST), Yavatmal (ST), Digras, Arni (ST), Pusad and Umarkhed (SC).

Yavatmal district comprises sixteen tehsils namely Arni, Umarkhed, Kalamb, Pandharkawada(Kelapur), Ghatanji, Zari Jamani, Darwha, Digras, Ner, Pusad, Babhulgaon, Mahagaon, Maregaon, Yavatmal, Ralegaon and Wani, Akola Bazar being another important town in the district.

Dr. Wani is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Environmental Mutagen Society and American Society of Photobiology.
Famous Kashmiri poets, such as Rasool Mir (known as the John Keats of Kashmir), Mehmood Gami or Mahmud Gami (Jaami of Kashmir), Hamidullah Shahabadi, Asad Mir,Peer Mushkoor,Ghulam Ahmad Wani (Amam Thoker) and many others originated in Doru Shahabad.Doru is also inhabited by some present day heirs of Kashmiri poetry namely S.M. Maqbool Fayiz, Yasir Kashmiri, A.G. Nisar Shahbadi, Waahid Kashmiri,Figaar Kashmiri, Armaan Shahabadi and the list goes on.
It connects Sewagram Junction towards Nagpur-Delhi and Wardha Junction towards Ahmedabad on north-west direction, Chandrapur and Balharshah towards Kazipet-Chennai-Hyderabad on south-east direction, and Majri Khadan, Wani, Rajura, Pipalkutti, Adilabad and Mumbai on east direction.
In 2000, Dr. Wani received an award for applied research in medicine, the Charles F. Kettering Prize, from the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation.

In 2011, Wani's song Hujan was selected to be played throughout the month of May on Dandelion Radio, an internet radio station founded in June 2006 with the aim of pursuing the musical legacy of the popular and influential BBC Radio 1 disk jockey John Peel.
