Alexander and James Brownlie came to the area in August 1838, having followed the Mississippi River to the mouth of the Wapsipinicon River, then west along its banks.
The novel The Cobweb by Stephen Bury (a pseudonym for author Neal Stephenson writing with his uncle George Jewsbury) is set in the fictional Iowa twin towns of Wapsipinicon-Nishnabotna.

In addition to the Champion quarries, Mr. Green opened a quarry on Buffalo Creek, worked the old state quarry on the Wapsipinicon River for a time, a quarry at Wasioja, Minnesota, and one at Shuster, Missouri.
