Soner co-authored a book, with Wendell Fleming, on viscosity solutions and stochastic control; Controlled Markov Processes and Viscosity Solutions (Springer-Verlag) in 1993, which was listed among the most-cited articles on computer science by Thomson Science in 2004.
In 1987, he and his Brown colleague Wendell Fleming won the American Mathematical Society's Steele Prize "for their pioneering work in Normal and Integral currents."
Fleming received his PhD under Laurence Chisholm Young at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a thesis entitled Boundary and related notions for generalized parametric surfaces.
