Christian is a great-grandson of the last Grand Duke of Oldenburg, Frederick Augustus II and through his mother he is related to the Princes of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg, who belong to a morganatic branch of the House of Wittelsbach descending from Frederick I, Elector Palatine.

Duke Christian was born in Rastede, Lower Saxony, the only son of Duke Anton-Günther of Oldenburg and his wife Princess Ameli of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg (b. 1923).
He was the son of Richard 4th Fürst zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and of his wife, née Princess Madeleine zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg.

Born at the Landgrave’s Palace in Rotenburg an der Fulda she was the seventh child of Ernest Leopold, Landgrave of Hesse-Rotenburg by his wife, Countess Eleonore of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort.

Agnes married Constantine, Hereditary Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg, eldest child and only son of Karl Thomas, Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg and his wife Princess Sophie of Windisch-Grätz, on 31 May 1829 at Schloss Wildeck in Zschopau, Kingdom of Saxony.
In 1929 Wertheim moved to Paris where she lived for six years, composing music and writing for the Amsterdam newspaper Het Volk on the Parisian music scene, while studying composition and instrumentation from the composer Louis Aubert.
