Westar 1 was the first of five Westar satellites launched by Western Union from 1974 to 1982.
On January 22, 1980, the station reached a milestone when it linked up with the satellite Westar 1.

FSSs were the first geosynchronous communications satellites (such as Intelsat 1 (Early Bird), Syncom 3, Anik 1, Westar 1, Satcom 1 and Ekran); new satellites continue to be launched to this day.
