Eastleigh Athletic became one of the eight founder members of the Hampshire League in 1896 and were league champions in 1897–98, a season in which they also entered a side in the Western League where they also flourished.

Buelow got his start in the major leagues after being sold in September 1899 by Detroit of the Western League to the St. Louis Perfectos with Tom Thomas and Pat Dillard.
Collins began his professional baseball career in 1917 with the Joplin Miners, a minor league baseball team that were members of the Class A Western League.
He has also written about the Western League and the College World Series.
He built a ballpark in 1882, and it became home to the Indianapolis Hoosiers of the American Association for their only major league season in 1884; they played in the Western League before that circuit folded after the 1885 campaign.
In 1986 he was appointed manager of Taunton Town, taking them to the Western League title in 1989-90.
