Christopher Columbus Nash, a Confederate veteran, former prisoner of war at Johnson's Island in Ohio, and the former sheriff of Grant Parish, led companies of white militias at Colfax, the seat of Grant Parish, and killed tens of blacks in the Colfax Massacre.

On September 14, 1874, Badger was seriously wounded in the Battle of Liberty Place, an insurrection by 5,000 members of the paramilitary White League, who fought against the police and took over state buildings in an attempt to seat John McEnery, the Democratic candidate for governor in the disputed 1872 election.
The Coushatta massacre was followed shortly by a large White League insurrection in New Orleans, where they hoped to install the Democrat John McEnery as governor.
In September 1874, in the Battle of Liberty Place, 5,000 members of the White League fought against about 3500 Metropolitan police in a takeover of state buildings for three days, attempting to take back the state government and seat John McEnery as governor.
