In 1652 he attempted to refute two ministers of Salisbury, Thomas Warren and William Eyre, in a sermon on Justification by Faith, which was published and commended by Richard Baxter.
In 1653 the last contribution was severely criticised by William Eyre in his Vindiciae Justificationis Gratuitae, in which Cranford's doctrine of conditional justification by faith is condemned.

The property then passed in 1706 by marriage to William Eyre, on condition he changed his name to Archer and subsequently (in 1800) to the MP, John Houblon, who also changed his name, to John Archer-Houblon.
