He regarded this as an opportunity to study the swamp vegetation and published the first of many works, "The Vegetation of Namanve Swamp, Uganda" in the Journal of Ecology in 1935.

His management plan for Rùm became a prototype of its kind, and was published in the first volume of the Journal of Applied Ecology in 1964.

Returning to Scotland in 1955, he became the Conservation Officer for Scotland, helping to establish and assisting in the management of many of the National Nature Reserves, which later formed part of the Scottish Natural Heritage.

William Julius Eggeling (18 July 1909 Upper Largo, Fife - 10 February 1994 Perth) was a Scottish-born forester, botanist and naturalist.
