In 1770, he married Anne Miller, daughter of Sir John Miller, 4th Baronet by whom he had a son, William Charles (1772–1849).
Renowned for his taste in arts, he moved to London to seek his fame and fortune at the Royal Court, where he met his ‘patron’, William Charles Keppel (1772-1849), 4th Earl of Albermarle.

Admiral of the Fleet Sir Henry Keppel, GCB, OM (14 June 1809 – 17 January 1904) was a British admiral, son of the 4th Earl of Albemarle and of his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Lord de Clifford.
On 31 July 1939, she married Lt. Col. Colin Keppel Davidson, a grandson of William Keppel, 7th Earl of Albemarle, and they had two children: Duncan Henry Davidson (b. 1941) and Harriet Mary (b. 1942), who married Michael Sefi, the current Keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection.
Rufus is a distant cousin of Her Royal Highness Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, because both the Duchess of Cornwall and Rufus are great-great-grand-children of Lord William Keppel, 7th Earl of Albemarle.
The coach was built in 1830 for Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge and his family used it for many years until they sold it to William Keppel, 7th Earl of Albemarle, who converted it into a semi-State landau.
Thomas Robert Keppel (1811 – 1863), married Frances Barrett-Lennard, daughter of Sir Thomas Barrett-Lennard, 1st Baronet and had issue.

Lord Albemarle married Sophia Mary MacNab, daughter of Sir Allan Napier MacNab, a Joint Premier of the Province of Canada, at Dundurn, Canada, on 15 November 1855.
