The Mauritius Commercial Bank’s history started on 1 September 1838 when Governor Sir William Nicolay proclaimed the establishment of 'La Banque Commerciale de l'îsle Maurice' in Port Louis.
Lieutenant General Sir William Nicolay KCH, CB was the third son of Frederick de Nicolay, Principal Page to Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III.
