His personal and professional experiences in these times of segregation influenced him to establish the first 14-bed Emergency and Maternity facility for African Americans and later on in 1961 opening of the first fully integrated medical facility Williamsburg Community Hospital.
In August 2006, it was replaced by a newer and larger facility, the 139-bed Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, located in adjacent York County, Virginia.
