At the time of Dart’s headmastership, Ballarat Grammar was a small Church of England boys’ school of up to two hundred or so students, at least half of them boarders from country towns and farms, especially in the Mallee, Wimmera and Western District regions of Victoria.
The new colony was named after Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert and was to comprise the area west of Longitude 143°, part of the Wimmera and parts of South Australia near the Victorian border.

Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk Peoples v Victoria is a decision of the Federal Court of Australia delivered on 13 December 2005 by Justice Ron Merkel in respect of a native title claim determination for the Wimmera western region of Victoria.
It is the largest city by population in the Wimmera region, and it is the main administrative centre for, and the most populous city within, the Rural City of Horsham local government area.
Shooting began in February 1972 near the Wimmera town of Horsham.
Madden was returned to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for the Wimmera in January 1880, holding that seat until March 1889.
