The territory of the municipality was enlarged in 1996, when it absorbed the neighboring municipalities of Aawangen, Ettenhausen, Guntershausen bei Aadorf and Wittenwil.
Heinrich may be of the family of the former rulers of Wittenwil in the Thurgau, who became destitute and abandoned their castle in 1339.
