Shortly after the town was divided, Network Rail announced the construction of a new railway station, Workington North railway station, to be completed within a week on land owned by the local council, to enable access across the river for residents.
A temporary station, called Workington North was constructed north of the Derwent to provide access to the town to those cut off by road.

Prince Charles visited the station on 27 November 2009 to inspect the construction work being undertaken as part of a visit to the region.
