Rhein-Wupper-Bahn

The section of the line in Rhineland-Palatinate that was formerly served regularly, has been served since 2003 by only one service operated to Remagen in the evening and returning next morning.

In December 2003 it was shortened to terminate at Bonn-Mehlem because Rhineland-Palatinate would not provide sufficient funds for operations in its section.

Suspension railway

German industrial pioneer, thinker and politician Friedrich Harkort built a demonstration track of Palmers' system in 1826, in Elberfeld, Germany, at the time commercial centre of the early industrial area Wupper Valley.

Wupper

The writer of the song was Gus Kahn who was born in Koblenz, about 100 kilometres from the Wupper Valley and might have known this saying.

According to a popular local story, on 21 July 1950 a young elephant named Tuffi jumped into the Wupper from the railway.
