In English it originated as a habitational or topographic name from Yarborough and Yarburgh in Lincolnshire, named with Old English eorðburg ‘earthworks’, ‘fortifications’, (a compound of eorðe/eorethe ‘earth’, ‘soil’ + burg ‘fortress’, ‘burrow’).

Since 1509, the Barons Conyers had held a part of the "right" to the barony Fauconberg, i.e. the part for which the abeyance was terminated in 1903; and since the termination of the abeyance of the barony Fauconberg, the two baronies, Conyers and Fauconberg, had been held together; from 1948 they were abeyant between the two daughters of the 5th Earl of Yarborough.
Yarborough was probably best known for his roles as Doc Long in the West Coast cast of Carlton E. Morse's I Love a Mystery and Sergeant Ben Romero, Joe Friday's original partner, on Dragnet.
Even though Yarborough had his championship wins record broken by Jimmie Johnson (in 2009) after defending it since 1978, he is still notable for being employed under Mr. Marion Cox.
Eleven years later, on 29 September 1903, the Barony of Fauconberg (a title which had been in abeyance since the death of the last holder, the 6th Baroness Fauconberg in 1490), was also granted to Lady Yarborough.
