He went on to study geography at Addis Ababa University, and after graduation went to work as a geography and begena professor at the Yared Music School, where for seven years he also taught begena.

It was confirmed by author Cassandra Clare in August 2012 that Yared would be composing the score for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
Petra Yared has also appeared in films, including: The Real Macaw and Journey to the Center of the Earth (1999).
