The Mykola Lysenko Music Competition was founded in 1962 by the Ukrainian composers Andriy Shtoharenko, Yevhen Stankovych, Myroslav Skoryk, Levko Kolodub, the singer Yelyzaveta Tchavdar, pianists Yevhen Rzhanov and the composer’s granddaughter Ariadna Lysenko.
Concert works have been composed for the tsymbaly by professional Ukrainian composers V. Shumeiko, Volodymyr Zubytsky, Anatoliy Haidenko, Bohdan Kotiuk, Izydor Vymer, Dezyderiy Zador, Myroslav Skoryk and Yevhen Stankovych.
From 1965 to 1970 Yehven studied composition with Boris Lyatoshynsky and Myroslav Skoryk at the Kiev Conservatory.

He has worked as a music editor, a chairman of the Ukrainian Composers' Union, and has been working as a professor of composition in the Kiev Conservatory, now the National Music Academy of Ukraine, since 1998.
