The owner and founder of Mengniu is Mr Niu Gensheng, a former employee of Yili, another Inner Mongolian dairy giant which is now Mengnius largest competitor.
The later Qianlong Emperor dispatched an army to Yili in order to suppress their resistance against the Qing Dynasty.

The economy required a more powerful pony than was found in the area, so in 1944 the Arabian, Yili, Hequ, Kabarda and small type Ardennes were introduced.
