A former chief of the First Nation, Eric Fairclough, was leader of the Yukon New Democratic Party and leader of the opposition in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.
He was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly for the riding of Whitehorse Centre in the 1996 Yukon general election and was narrowly defeated in the 2000 election.
Hayden was elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the 1989 election, succeeding Roger Kimmerly in the district of Whitehorse South Centre.
He is the brother of Dean Hassard, who previously represented the same district in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2006.
