A8ernA, an urban renewal project for the space under the A8 motorway as it passes through Koog aan de Zaan, was a joint winner of the 2006 European Prize for Urban Public Space.
While growing up in Wormer in the Dutch Zaanstreek area, he became known as a teenage hacker and appeared as one of the main characters in Jan Jacobs's book "Kraken en Computers" ("Hacking and computers", Veen uitgevers 1985, ISBN 90-204-2651-6) which describes the early hacker scene in the Netherlands.
The Hazemeyer design had been brought to Britain by the Dutch minelayer Willem van der Zaan that escaped German occupation in May 1940.
