Mersault gets to know the rich invalid Roland Zagreus (Zagreus is a character of Greek mythology) who shows Mersault a way out: "Only it takes time to be happy. A lot of time. Happiness, too, is a long patience. And in almost every case, we use up our lives making money, when we should be using our money to gain time."
Later Greek writers, like Strabo in the first century CE, linked Sabazios with Zagreus, among Phrygian ministers and attendants of the sacred rites of Rhea and Dionysos.
Dan follows the directions of an infatuated sixty year-old albino, Horace Zagreus, who believes him to be a genius.
In a further development of the concept, the Big Finish Productions audio play Neverland written by Alan Barnes, makes mention of 'The Knights of St John the Beheaded' whose Earthly myths make reference to the Gallifreyan legends of Rassilon and his battle with the beast Zagreus.
