In 1983, Khatami married Zahra Eshraghi, granddaughter of Ruhollah Khomeini (founder of the Islamic republic), and an activist in women's rights.
Eshraghi was criticized in 2010, for coming out in support for presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi and was supportive of the Iranian Green Movement.

In 1983, Esraghi married Mohammad-Reza Khatami, former head of the Islamic Iran Participation Front, the main reformist party in Iran and younger brother of former president Mohammad Khatami.
