The Chuban tribes, or "Weak Huns", took advantage of Uar (Hephthalites) weakness and conquered Zhetysu, where they established the principality of Chuban (in Chinese literature commonly called Yueban), which existed until the 480s AD.
The Chuban remained in Zhetysu and established a princedom that existed until the 5th century AD.
The province was divided into six districts, the chief towns of which were Verny (the capital), Jarkent, Kopal, Pishpek, Przhevalsk and Sergiopol.

The two major Russian fortresses and garrisons in the region, Verny and Pishpek, were founded in 1854 on the sites of former Kokandian fortresses on the Steppe frontier.

It consisted of four or five provinces: Akmolinsk, Semipalatinsk, Turgai, Uralsk and from 1882 to 1899 Semirechensk, having a total area of 855,000 square kilometers and a total population of 3,454,000 (both including Semirechensk) in 1897.
The Kazakh Khanate was founded in 1456-1465 by Janybek Khan and Kerey Khan, on the banks of Jetysu ("seven rivers") in the southeastern part of the present-day Republic of Kazakhstan.
