Nehra started playing first-class cricket for his hometown, Delhi, in the 1997/1998 season and made his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Colombo in 1999 and his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at Harare in 2001.
He was a member of the team captained by Shafiq-ul-Haq that lost its Semi Final against Zimbabwe and then also lost the Consolation Final against Papua New Guinea in the 1982 ICC Trophy in England.
He officiated in the first ever Test between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at Harare in October 1994 as the neutral umpire; his colleague was Ian Robinson.
The tournament came three months after the World Cup which saw Ireland beat the Test nations Pakistan and Bangladesh, and tie with Zimbabwe, gaining themselves a right to be ranked on the official ICC ODI Championship.
