The generic name honors Professor Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska of the Instytut Paleobiologii PAN, and it is derived from Greek sophia, meaning "wisdom" which is the classical root of the name Zofia.

"One of the most characteristic features of Catopsbaatar (which differentiates it not only from Kryptobaatar but from all the djadochtatherioids in which the zygomatic ridges are known), is a very deep anterior zygomatic ridge, and a small medial zygomatic ridge, the latter forming about a quarter of a circle and adhering the anterior one from behind," (Kielan-Jaworowska et al., 2002).
In their 2001 study, Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum found that most multituberculates could be referred to two suborders: Plagiaulacida and Cimolodonta.

Hurum, Luo, and Kielan-Jaworowska (2006) identified two of these jaws as belonging to Zhangheotherium and the third to Sinobaatar, showing that these two mammals were part of the animal's diet.
