Guenthner's research interests include computational linguistics, and has collaborated to the development of a number of online search platforms since 1996: AltaVista, Fast Search and Transfer (now purchased by Microsoft), RealNames, JobaNova, Exorbyte, All The Web, etc.
Upon leaving Cambridge, he worked at the Systems Research Center (SRC) at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) where, with Louis Monier, he was one of the two main creators of AltaVista.
Louis Monier (born 1956), founder of Internet search engine AltaVista
According to its creator Julian Assange: "Surfraw provides a fast unix command line interface to a variety of popular WWW search engines and other artifacts of power. It reclaims google, altavista, dejanews, freshmeat, research index, slashdot, and many others from the false-prophet, pox-infested heathen lands of html forms, placing these wonders where they belong; deep in unix heartland, as god-loving extensions to the shell."
