In the 1960s astronomer Peter van de Kamp claimed that he had discovered a planet orbiting Barnard's Star using astrometry.

He was a department director at the Observatorio AstronĂ³mico de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata, specializing in astrometry and celestial mechanics, from 1955 to 1972.
He is known for his freewares WinAstrometry (used at many Italian amateur observatories for the calculation of the astrometric positions of the asteroids from CCD images) and waEphemeris, a minor planets ephemeris.
In her letter to professor Sergey Blazhko, head of the Astrometry Department of Moscow State University, dated October 19, 1942, she wrote that her first bomb she promised the Nazis for the building of the Faculty of mechanics and mathematics, which was bombed by them in the winter.
