A business incubator for medical device development in preparation for commercialization, AMI was founded in 1998 when billionaire medical device entrepreneur and philanthropist Alfred E. Mann made a $100 million gift to USC, a major private research university in Los Angeles.
In Jan 2012, MobME tied up with The National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), The Department of Science and Technology and Technopark, Trivandrum to set up India's first Public–private partnership telecom Business incubator named 'Startup Village' at Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation Park in Kalamassery.
In an area of approximately 3.6 km², 2 km² of which are occupied by the Park, there are several research and development labs, innovative startups and business incubators in a range of fields such as information technologies (e.g. Microsoft, MIPS Technologies), telecommunications, electronics, materials, production, energy, environment, biotechnologies and fine chemistry.
