Qaid (also caid or kaid), various forms of responsible official found in places ranging from the Kingdom of Sicily to rural North Africa
Born in Sidi Bou Said in a family from the beylical agricultural makhzen, he is great-grandson of Ismail Caid Essebsi, a mamluk of Tunisian corsairs in Sardinia at the beginning of the 19th century, raised with the beylical family and later an important member of the beylical administration.
Lumbroso was appointed rabbinical judge of the latter; and, being a man of means, he filled at the same time the position of receiver of taxes to the bey as well as that of caid, being the representative official of his community.
The Moroccan sultan Abdelaziz assisted him in building the Ribat, as he sent craftsmen, materials, financing and arms, and also appointed him Caid.
On October 4, 2002 in Vitry-sur-Seine, South of Paris, 17 year old Sohane Benziane, the daughter of Kabyle immigrants, was burned alive in front of her friends in a cellar by her former boyfriend, a local caid (gang leader).
