It is a favourite food of North Queensland’s iconic flightless bird, the Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius).
The Tulkubara, or "The Cassowary Tribe", distinguished themselved by their head-dresses that consisted of red and yellow feathers.
As an emblem the PVK chose the Cassowary (kasuaris in Dutch): the Corp's motto was Persevero (I persist).
In September 2013, the zoo announced plans to bring Cassowarys to the zoo.
