His grandfather was a Sierra Leone Creole catechist in Brass, Nigeria called J.D. Garrick.

He became a catechist in Nicolai's Church in Copenhagen in 1757, curate in Frederiksborg and hospital priest in Hillerød in 1770, curate in Nicolai's Church in 1772 and dean in the Diocese of Christiania in 1774.
It was through his work in a chapel in these villas that he met a young Capuchin friar, Carlos Armando Bustos, and also a group of lay members, amongst which was the young catechist Fátima Cabrera.
