unusual facts about composting

Frank Thérien

On March 2, 2007, Thérien along with fellow councillor André Laframboise announced his opposition to a city project that would built a new composting plant at the site of a former landfill of the former city of Aylmer.

Helix of sustainability

Note difference between landfill and compost - the limited biological activity in landfill is slow, and mostly anaerobic resulting in the production of methane, whereas composting is a rapid aerobic process resulting in humus, water and non-fossil CO2.

Kaolin Mushroom Farms

In 1982 the Pia family switched its focus from composting back to mushroom growing when they purchased the largest mushroom farm in Chester County from a subsidiary of the Clorox Company.

Lace monitor

They frequently attack the large composting nests of scrub turkeys to steal their eggs, and often show injuries on their tails inflicted by male scrub turkeys pecking at them to drive them away.

Steady Brook

Steady Brook is a progressive 'green community', encouraging re-cycling and composting, and limited use of cosmetic pesticides.

Urine diversion

Haiti - SOIL has built urine-diversion toilets and composting waste treatment plants in Port-au-Prince as part of the 2010 Haiti earthquake emergency relief effort and in northern Haiti.

Wisley Airfield

In March 2010, the then-Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, John Denham, gave permission to Wharf Land Investments to build a large composting facility on the former airfield but so far this has not been constructed.

Xylanase

Commercial applications for xylanase include the chlorine-free bleaching of wood pulp prior to the papermaking process, and the increased digestibility of silage (in this aspect, it is also used for fermentative composting).
