He was a Reposteiro-Mór (a major footman at the royal household encharged with drawing and undrawing the curtains and hangings and treasurer of the store-house for furniture) of King Manuel I of Portugal and a Fidalgo of his Royal Household and Alcaide-Mór of Arraiolos.
His father was a Fidalgo-knight of the Royal House and possessed two estates in Chelas.
At first, he came by medical advice, he came back regularly, stating "This is the only beach in Portugal where the seafood aroma is not neutralized by the ladies wardrobes. One can see in here the old rush nature, the Cabeceiras majorat, and all the Fidalgos who dine hake with onion".

Nobleman and Fidalgo-Esquire of the House of Infante João, Lord of Reguengos and master of the Portuguese Order of Saint James (Santiago), he was granted in 1446, as hereditary fief (capitania), the island of Porto Santo and, together with his fellow fleet commanders, started the colonization of the islands.
