3 unusual facts about glyphosate

Maurice Moloney

Prof. Maloney holds over 300 patents in plant biotechnology worldwide and led the Cell Biology group at Calgene to develop the world’s first transgenic oilseeds, which resulted in RoundUp Ready Canola and other novel crops.

Recombinant DNA

;Herbicide-resistant crops : commercial varieties of important agricultural crops (including soy, maize/corn, sorghum, canola, alfalfa and cotton) have been developed that incorporate a recombinant gene that results in resistance to the herbicide glyphosate (trade name Roundup), and simplifies weed control by glyphosate application.

Taeniatherum caput-medusae

Glyphosate (Roundup) applied at 0.375 lbs/acre in the early spring before seeds are produced can provide good results.

Genetically modified organism containment and escape

In 1997, Percy Schmeiser discovered that canola growing on his farm was genetically modified to be resistant to Roundup although he had not planted GM seed.

Vistive Gold

MON 87705 (OECD UI: MON-877Ø5-6, also known as Vistive Gold) is a genetically engineered variety of glyphosate-resistant low-linolenic, high-oleic soybeans produced by Monsanto.
